In recent time the first challenge of energy crise was the Iran-US-Israel conflict from 28 th February 2026, continuing till end April, with two cease fires. India’s dependence on Crude oil and LPG import to the extent of 90% threw challenge of meeting its domestic fuel and POL demand. The natural gas import is limited to 50%. The opportunity in this crisis emerges as increase in Domestic Piped Natural Gas Connection (DPNG). Since start of City gas in India in 1992, the total operative DPNG connections till end of 2025 have been 1.6 Cr (translating into a daily average of 1328 connections) even though the committed number from authorized entities is 11.86 Cr. The Government initiative championed by PNGRB, the target of 50,00,000 is set for completion within 3 months (from April to June 2026, have an asking rate of 55,555/day).

To achieve this target the Government has given several concessions regarding permissions from PESO, NHAI, State Government and local bodies, vide Order Dated 24th March 2026. The movement has got very encouraging support from many stakeholders. The Integrated Headquarter of MoD (Army) has issued instructions on 29 th April 2026, to all command to liaise with concerned CGD entity to take natural gas for their use. Since entire country is now covered for gas charge, all these defence installation will also get gas charge.

Further, the energy sovereignty has encouraged Bio-Gas, SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), Bio-Ethanol W2E and Renewable energy. The Government has implemented the CBG Synchronization scheme to utilize the Bio- Gas in the CGD. Apart from replacement of LPG by DPNG, the CNG as transport fuel helps in reducing the import dependance on crude oil.

The above challenges have thrown opportunities for CGD stakeholders.
